Mazars, international audit and advisory service group, was honoured with EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR THE BEST CORPORATE SUSTAINIBILITY IN ENVIRONMENT FOR THE PROJECT OF PAPER NEUTRAL AUDIT TREE PLANTING AND TREE ADOPTION. The award was granted by Indonesian – Netherland Association Corporate Sustainability Award (ICSA) 2009 on 22 December 2009.
James Kallman, President Director of Mazars in Indonesia stated ‘As a global firm, Mazars is aware of its high consumption of paper. For this reason, a core aspect of our CSR work addresses the impact of this on the environment, in particular deforestation’
Mazars started the initiative by partnering with Conservation International (CI). CI is responsible to calculate the effect of Mazars’ paper consumption on the environment (from 2003-2008), and specifically the amount of paper trees it takes to produce the paper it uses. Following this paper consumption audit, around two hundred staff of Mazars then compensated their ecological footprints by planting trees on a 10,000 square meters of Green Belt land in the National Park Gunung Gede Pangrango in West Java. The main intention of the paper use audit is to replant an equivalent number of trees to balance out the amount of paper its use on daily basis.
Mazars is committed to be the leading company in measuring its carbon footprints and compensating for its impact, in particular through reforestation. This Award has marked Mazars’ commitment to become a leading paper neutral company in Indonesia.
James Kallman, added ‘The global trend toward sustainable business practices that are in line with environmental protection is intensifying and unavoidable. Responsible companies must act actively to support the positive movement for the environment and change the way we do business. Our objective for the years ahead is to continue to plant trees every year to offset the paper we used and to encourage our clients and other stakeholders to participate in this initiative.’
Indonesia is known as one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases due to deforestation and Mazars truly believes that private sector should play a leading role in the area of climate and environmental issues especially when these topics are very close to the business and daily life.
“Mazars is a global integrated partnership which has a lot of respect for the environment and continues to pursue our growth model in a sustainable manner, recognizing and limiting as far as possible the impact of our activities on our environment. What we are doing in Indonesia is in alignment with Mazars’ Global Social Responsibility Strategy which includes: respect for the environment, promote diversity of people and cultures, and support for social entrepreneurship through skilled-based sponsorship,” explained Marzuki Usman, Senior Advisor of Mazars Asia Pacific.
